Create a custom challenge
Bespoke challenge development provides organisations the opportunity to engage with rangatahi on topics important to them, while delivering key STEM learning aligned to the curriculum. The development process provides the opportunity for your STEM professionals to be part of the challenge design.
The Wonder Project makes things happen for Kiwi kids. By changing their perceptions and building their confidence with science and technology, we can open up a world of possibility for their future. But we can’t do this without partners who have a shared belief in the critical importance of this for Aotearoa.
Challenge criteria
We want to add new challenges to our suite, so kaiako can continue to bring fun STEM learning experiences into the classroom. We’re currently targeting ākonga in Years 5–8 (ages 8–13). All Wonder Project challenges need to:
- Be fun, hands-on and project-based
- Use science, maths and technology to solve problems
- Have a future-focused mindset
- Teach STEM skills, including problem solving, creativity, critical thinking and teamwork
- Be pedagogically sound with scaffolded learning aligned to the New Zealand curriculum
- Incorporate te ao Māori and work in kura kaupapa
Development phases
In year one, we go through discovery and development, and run a pilot of the new challenge in schools. In year two we refine the challenge and develop all the materials in full Wonder Project style, ready for a national roll-out.
Discovery
We kōrero about the potential for a challenge and the long-term investment required, and then assess if the potential challenge will meet our criteria.
Scoping
We develop a high-level challenge concept and work with STEM professionals, kaiako, te ao Māori experts and your people to refine this and set the direction of the modules.
Development
We build the challenge concept out into ākonga, kaiako and ambassador resources, getting input from experts along the way.
Pilot
We run a pilot programme in 20 classes representing a mix of ākonga and kaiako, to test against the challenge criteria.
Review and roll-out
We review the challenge based on feedback and make refinements before planning a larger roll-out in schools.
