Module 6: Care

Inā kei te mōhio koe ko wai koe, i anga mai koe i hea, kei te mōhio koe kei te anga atu koe ki hea – if you know who you are and where you are from, then you will know where you are going

Rōpū, you’ve made it to the final challenge! After a lot of hard mahi, and floods of fun, get ready to let the waters flow one last time.

Learn how we care for wai at the end of its journey through our wai network, then get your network ready for its final performance and celebrate your challenge successes and failures.

Care

We’ve reached the end of water’s journey through our wai network – care. The care stage is where wai cares for the hapori and whenua it’s been connected to, and our hapori cares for the wai.

This stage is really important. Because it may be the end of water’s journey through our network, but it’s also a continuation of water’s journey through Te Hurihanga Wai (the water cycle).

Ranginui and Papatūānuku

Remember the Sky Father and Earth Mother? After wai has nourished the whenua and hapori, it’s returned to Ranginui so he can stay connected with Papatūānuku.

Spring into sustainability

Harming wai by making it dirty or wasting Wai-Māori (fresh water) can mean there’s less wai to nourish future generations. And because there’s not much freshwater available on Earth, it’s really important to be sustainable with wai, now.

There are lots of things we can do at home to make sure the needs of wai are put first, and that it’s cared for before it returns to Ranginui:

How will you care for the wai that’s travelled through your network?

Let’s hydrate our hapori!

For the final challenge, you’re going to join forces with a rōpū that has the other challenge scenario. With your combined networks, your challenge is to hydrate the entire hapori!

Bring on the final competition.

Activity 6.1: Hydrate our hapori

Pool your resources and connect your wai network to another to hydrate your hapori.

I wonder how water reaches us?

Mīharo! By nourishing the hapori with your wai network while protecting the mauri of wai, you’ve answered the challenge pātai: I wonder how water reaches us?

The future will be a better place for the land, water and people because of STEM superstars like you.

Whānau showcase

Organise a time to invite your whānau along to school to showcase your wai networks, what you learnt, and let them experience how you hydrate your hapori! They'll be amazed at what you have achieved.

I wonder how to tell our story?

Bring your Water Challenge story to life by creating an epic video or poster for the final Water Challenge competition. Make sure you follow these guidelines to be in to win a prize for your school:

  • Be clear to help your audience understand your story
  • Video guidelines:
    • Plan the beginning, middle and end of your video
    • Think about sound, visuals and script
    • Make sure it’s no more than 3 minutes long.
  • Poster guidelines:
    • Plan the poster layout so it’s organised and easy to follow
    • Think about how to use graphics and visuals to enhance presentation.

Send in your entry by 17 October

Get your kaiako or ambassador to send a copy of your video or poster to the Wonder Project Community Facebook Group, or to hello@wonderproject.nz.

Activity 6.2: Water Challenge competition

Create a video or poster that tells the story of your Water Challenge journey and go in the draw to win a prize.

Post challenge survey

Now’s the time to tell us what you thought of the Water Challenge! When you complete our survey, it helps us to make the challenge even better for next time.

You can tell us all the good bits, the bad bits and what you think could be better for next time.

Tools down!

Tino pai rawa atu! Today you:

  • Learned about the ‘care’ stage of the journey of wai
  • Continued the STEM design process
  • Connected two networks to hydrate your hapori
  • Completed student surveys
  • Answered the challenge pātai – I wonder how water reaches us?
